Substantial work has been carried out to salvage the exquisite carvings and designs that adorn the structure and we can wander through the site today and marvel at the incredible detail of its narrative panels, which detail everything from Buddhist doctrines to the daily life of the Javanese. Older by nearly half a century than the site at Prambanan, Borobodur is believed to have been built on the top of the foundations for what was originally a temple dedicated to Shiva, abandoned by the Hindu Sanjayas when their Buddhist rivals the Saliendras swept through the Malay peninsula during the 8th century.Ī combination of earthquakes, subsidence and the mass migration of the Javanese to the east of the island saw the temple abandoned sometime during the 9th century, to be rediscovered again later by the British. The structure itself is immense, a gigantic Buddhist stupa constructed from two million blocks that covers an area of 200sq metres and rises some 34.5 metres above the Kedu Plain. Constructed in the 8th century this incredible monument, a petrified vision of the Buddhist cosmos, was lost for 900 years when Mount Merapi erupted and covered Borobodur in a layer of volcanic ash. Combat can be avoided most of the time just by talking but with the magic system, the outcome can be so varied. It also meshes well with the gameplay cause you can read how the enemy is acting and determine whethere they're winding up for a big attack next turn or going on the defensive.Īnd don't get me started with the magic system. Each encounter feels less like you're fighting a bunch of pixels and data and more like real living beings coexisting in the world. It's no brainer but yet it feels so epic at times, because once again the writing.īy reading you can picture how frantic the combat, how the enemy is bleeding and scared, or how you're desperately clinging to life. The combat is also great in it's own way, at first it seem's superficial, you decide on a slider whether to defend or how hard you'll attack and if you're number is higher than the enemies, you'll take no damage but they will.
